Vettaiyadu Vilaiyadu Movie Review

August 26, 2006 at 11:25 pm (Personal)

Just came back from Vettaiyadu Velaiyadu – Innovative multiplex, Bangalore.

First, it’s a kamal movie – so I was already going to watch it sooner or later anyway. But after listening to “Machi, You’ve got to watch this movie da, this is ultimate! It’s like watching a movie ten years ahead of it’s time da. Don’t miss it” by my friend Veera, I decided to watch it the very next day. Guess what, Veera wanted to watch it again and offered to join for another show.

Movie starts with a 007 style action – Kamal against a local don – dishum dishum – kamal wins and the title song kicks in. Intro graphics are ordinary but the music score was cool. Kamal looks his usual charismatic – only a touch old and little out of shape. One thing, the way he walks, talks and moves with a stiff poture makes us imagine if his clothes were probably over starched or something :)

For the next 30 minutes will give you a feeling of watching three different tamil movies in cricket highlights style. Prakash Raj, his wife and daughter – all turning out as victims of a serial killer. Finally everyone dies and Kamal goes to NYC to investigate the killings.

You can see Kamal with loads of cute chicks around him in the flight to NYC. I don’t know if this was just coincidence or purposeful – but all of them looked like super models from Milan or Paris. Never had any one like that sit next to me when I happened to fly :(

As we enjoy watching these pretty ladies, boom! We are bombarded with a really lengthy flashback of Mr. and Mrs Raghavan(Kamal and his dead wife Kamalee). Yes, Yes – We’ve seen these flashback way too many times! From the days of “Vetri Vizha” – Dashing brave cop. Falls in love with a cute girl. Gets married. Villains kill the girl and the cop takes revenge.

But God is not so merciless, he at least saves us from Kamal’s “Abirami-Abirami” style crying by asking Harris Jeyaraj to pitch in with some sad back ground music when Kamal mourns the death of Kamalee.

We are still struggling to come out of Kamal’s flashback and boom! We have Jyothika on screen now. What’s she doing in a NY hotel room after being ditched by her husband in Seattle which is on the other end of the United States? Oh! Yes, she came to New York to stay in the room right next to Kamal so that he can save him while she attempts to commit suicide. Yeah, now we get the hint.

Kamal teams up with a phirangi police officer Anderson to crack down on the murderers in New York. Kamal is gifted with super natural powers called “Raghavan’s instinct” and leads the NY Police to find dead bodies of people who were killed in four different places in the USA. Wow!

What’s even more miraculous is that Kamal cracks the traces of the serial killers with ease and manages to find them in no time. You would notice that Kamal uses a MacBook (Apple laptop) to help him with the investigation. Kamal sir, if only you used a Microsoft Windows XP based laptop you would have solved this mystery even earlier :)

Gautam suddenly realizes that it’s only two hours in to the movie now and he can’t let Kamal catch the villains so soon – he makes the villains escape from NY and hit Mumbai to sing “Neruppe Sikki Mukki Neruppe” with Deepal Shaw dancing in the beaches of Goa.

Story shifts to India then with Jyothika and Kamal hitting Chennai next week.

Kamal usually bonds easily with his woman on screen and you can see a spark in the relationship right from the start. Well, this movie is one big exception! Kamal and Jyothika are a total misfit on screen and behave like some uncle and aunty! Has Kamal lost his charm with the ladies?

Do I have to tell you how a Climax will shape in a Cop movie? Yes Yes – villains kidnap the heroine and wants Kamal to come to a remote location in the outskirts of the city.

As expected, hero Mr. Raghavan(Kamal) comes on top and wins the final battle to reclaim Jyothika – only to find her buried under the earth for the entire time he was fighting the villains. What happens from now is something which anyone can guess, and am not going to tell you more.

Positives from the movie

  • Kamal , Kamal’s getup, Kamal’s dressing
  • Harris Jeyaraj
  • Ravi Verma’s camera
  • Song sequence of “Paartha Mudal Naale” with Kamal and Kamalniee is cute
  • The NYPD detective guy “Anderson”

Negatives

  • Loose story line
  • Non-impressive dialogues
  • Too much similarity with Kaaka Kaaka for characters, dialogues and sequences
  • Gautam tries to create an impact by making the corpses look as gory as possible! Ech!
  • Too lengthy ! Too many sub-stories within the main plot

There are lots of petty things that I cannot resist to crib about –

  1. There are the subtitles that come every 10 or 15 minutes telling the audience the date and time for every scene. Come on Gautam, we are not fighting against time here to detonate a soon to explode Nuclear bomb here. This is not “Sum of all fears” or “Mission Impossible”. It’s a normal paced masala story and there is absolutely no need to tell us what day or time it is when Jyothika and Kamal wake up and meet in the Hotel lobby every day!
  2. There is a flashback for almost every character in the movie!
  3. Kamal using a Public Phone in NY to call India while he has a Moto Razr with him all the time
  4. Unnecessary information on the serial killers and their RESEARCH PROJECTS to save HUMANITY. Crap!
  5. Frequent “beeps” and “mutes” between dialogues due to use of offensive language. If you cannot convice the censor board to allow using them then why use them in the first place and later mute them?
  6. Jothika tells Kamal that the food that they service in the hotel is very American and wants to go to “Indian Café” to have some desi food. Ok, so there they are sitting in the Indian Café munching a Bread Toast with Spoon and Knife. Wow! How desi it looks!

Signing off in Sun TV thirai vimarsanam style punch dialogue!

Kaaka Kaaka was like adrenaline
Vettaiyadu Velaidya was like Anacin(headache)!

Good review. Your view point seems to match with what other people have to say……there are lots of mixed reactions to the movie.

There are lots of visitor reviews in this site. You can go through them.

machi, in san jose all theaters running this show were booked for the weekend. i have never heard of advance booking. looks like too much hyped or too good or ppl are too vetti :D. going to try for 12am show

  4. vanand said,

@Seenu – I might have under rated the movie a little cos my expectations were high due to the hype – by media and mostly by my friend Veera. But if you are expecting a “Kaaka Kaaka” Anbuchelvan in Kamal then you WILL be disappointed.

@Arun – machi – Night show for a tamil movie in Bangalore was HOUSE FULL. But i think many among the audience were telugu people – Cos there was a HUGE applause when Kamal casually says something good about telugu folks… :)

  5. arun said,

machi, didnt get the ticket today…im going to see it online itself.

Anand, I had pretty much the same reaction as you did and agree with you on all points. Lot of what you said about cop movie climax is very true. btw, do u know Rajesh at r&d (he recently moved from our campus here in svc to blore) ?

  8. vanand said,

@Prasad – Gautam sure put himself down with his pathetic movie. Kamal is wasted.

Anyway… Rajesh? hmmm Not sure… I know only on Rajesh and he is in Redmond campus as a PM and not in R&D.

  9. Pudaku said,

If u dont know to criticize a movie then dont do it, Its an amazing movie which was rightly citied by your friend as ten years ahead of its time, i beleive u wud love movies like tirupachi and sivakasi. Its just because of people like you, good movies are scarce.

  10. vanand said,

@Pudaku – Ok then, i will probably watch this movie again after ten years and let you know if I like it then. I prefer to watch movies that suits my taste “today” rather than ten years in to the future.

“Kurudhipunal” is ten years old now. Even today I would not miss watching it on a Sunday evening in Sun TV cos I still like it. It excites me the same way it did 10 years ago.

Some of your comments about negatives didn’t makes sense:

-Agreed, but I guess this was necessary to keep main story focussed on the 10 days of interest.

Kamal using a Public Phone in NY to call India while he has a Moto Razr with him all the time –
KAMAL DISCOVERED 9278.com after a few days on the web in NY – I mean he does have time to browse the net after talking to Jo! The whole routine of Kamal informing his senior of the progress is basically a way of explaining what’s going on to B and C center audience – yeah it was funny but it is something necessary.

Unnecessary information on the serial killers and their RESEARCH PROJECTS to save HUMANITY. Crap!
I think this was done to establish their delusions – here are guys who are killing but at the same time talking about saving humanity. Essentially they are gays in denial about their sexuality and a sociopath in denial about his psychosis – I can buy that

Frequent “beeps” and “mutes” between dialogues due to use of offensive language. If you cannot convice the censor board to allow using them then why use them in the first place and later mute them?
Poda oa*bleep* – dihellam oru commenta – haven’t you dealth with the government orgs in India ever??!!!

Jothika tells Kamal that the food that they service in the hotel is very American and wants to go to “Indian Café” to have some desi food. Ok, so there they are sitting in the Indian Café munching a Bread Toast with Spoon and Knife. Wow! How desi it looks!

Chilli Cheese Toast – that is a very desi creation. Ullukulla bombay chatni — mmmmm! I am surprised you noted this in that short time frame – maybe you conditioned yourself to find faults when you went in. I do that for a lot of movies and detect such innecessary details and criticize, pissing everyone in my family.

  12. Krishna said,

Its a big hit in India too. Theatres like Kasi, Albert are running 5 and 6 shows a day to accomodate the crowd. A blockbuster for Kamal after a long time.

  13. vanand said,

@Prabu – Am not trying to make any sense here Prabu, just giving my opinion. Am a kamal fan too, but i just think this movie was not up to the standards of my expectations as a fan, as a audience, as someone who paid Rs.120 for a ticket. Nothing more, nothing less.

But, hey – I know we get chilli cheese toast in front of Alsa Maal, Egnmore for Rs.12 — I love it too – but that can’t make it desi man!! :)
Even when we add the `green chutney` to it …it’s like calling “Panner Tikka Pizza” an Indian dish.. is it not a subset of Italian Pizza? still very Italian, right?

Just don’t buy yourself any treats during the intermission. Chances are you won’t get to eat it for a few days at least(unless you have a cast-iron stomach). Unbelievable amounts of blood and gore are strewn about the movie.

I don’t know why Gautham thinks he is a crime thriller specialist. He can’t keep the suspense alive for any length of time. KK had just as much violence and the saving grace there was the terrific chemistry between Jo & Surya. VV is definitely lacking in chemistry between the lead pair, although the romance writing is just as cute.

Gautham should stop focussing on blood and violence and make soft sweet love stories instead. He’d be way better at that.

And yes, I did notice that after all the talk about desi food, they ended up eating omelettes with knife and fork, and Kamal went to get OJ for Jo after they ate (what could be more American than OJ for breakfast!)

Also, another blooper – on the close up of Prakash Raj’s dead wife – the lady’s eyelids were flickering as she desperately tried to lie still…

And another point of interest…anyone notice the director dancing to “velli nilave” behind the lead pair?

  16. kingkumarda said,

I liked the movie very much… the experience of watching this movie is like reading a Dan Brown’s novel thru camera… Awesome work by Ravivarman… Kamal i got no words to describe his acting man he’s too cool not like everyother tamil star shouting all the time he comes and does everything in a ease there is a dialogue where kamal says “Neenga ellam chinna pasanga da!” is holds true to all other heroes… The minus part of the film as i consider is Lack of chemistry between Kamal and Jo… The success of Kaakha Kaakha is bcoz of the cemistry bet Surya and Jo… Usually Kamal share a fair amount of chemistry with his every heroine Starting from Srividya to Simran but this time that was missing, the fault may be from the side of gautham… Jo looks pretty but not much to do in this movie… Prakash Raj Wasted… BGM by Harris is superb but some songs sounds like church carols…. Watch the film for Kamal and Ravivarman… But Still “Kaakha Kaakha” is the Best film for Gautham Menon bcoz Balaji(Amudhan) character Resembles the villain of gautham’s previous movie… Raghav is better than Anbuselvan but Kaakha Kaakha Is far more better than Vettaiyadu Vellaiyadu…. But the is worht a watch… Dont miss the movie

  17. vanand said,

@ Anu – Yes Yes, we did notice “Gautam” doing a “Night Shyamalan” during the “Velli Nilave” song – I noticed it but was confused if I should list it under “Positives” or “Negatives” :)

Kamal should have got Jo a nice hot filter coffee … ah! I miss it badly here in Bangalore !

When u make a movie might as well do it right .. things like mute, using a public booth and so on cod have been avoided .. I wod say u review is far more interesting to read rather than to watch the movie itself … Well done !

I guess u *edited* have some political background and must be a patron of left parties coz u’ve got that knack of blowing things up however small it may be.

I must also appreciate ur sense of humour which is AWEFULLY interesting due to which *edited* someone has decided not to see the movie.

    *edited*

What I suggest to all those people *edited* who judge a movie by reading few lines of rubbish, is to first watch V V in a good theatre.I assure u all that it is really worth watching the movie and I dont regret paying RS.120 for the same.

Coming back to the review,I completely agree with Prabu’s criticism on Anand’s review except for one point—
–Kamal using a Public Phone in NY to call India while he has a Moto Razr with him all the time …………But I dont think that is too big a mistake to label a movie aweful.
And I also believe that the story line is not that week..

    Have a good time folks.

  22. vanand said,

@ Pavithra – Oh! No.. No. You should watch the movie in theaters and theatres only. Don’t watch it online like Arun
    (damn! You pirates again!)

@ Bindu – ditto as to Pavithra –

@ james – Dude, Why are you trying to flame me? If I tell you how many times I sleep with my girl friend in week then that is questionable. What’s wrong in saying I work in Bangalore? Let me tell you, Bangalore is not Mars and I certainly don’t think it’s better than Chennai.

    @Mohan – and @everyone_else_who_think_this_review_is_crap

I wanted to write a review of the movie from my standpoint and not a “fan mail” post of Mr. Gautam and Mr. Kamalahassan.

  23. Sriram said,

Hey what u guys forgot the lead Villain..I felt he didn’t really have the screen presence of Jeeva..But script was as usual tight but chemistry between Jo and Kamal was a big let down..

  24. shiv said,

    anand,

why isnt your review elaborating on the slick editing, cinematography or even about the fabulous music and background score of HJ. While the way you elaborate on the negatives is phenomenal, you need to elaborate on the positives as well – not just pointers. We dont expect you to send a fan mail – yes – but we need a review that does a fair evaluation of the movie as a whole. there is a tinge of sarcasm throughout your review which makes it clear that you had a predetermined agenda to do a VV bashing, which is not right my friend.

They say assumption is the mother of all screw ups. and my friend, assumptions you have done aplenty. to quote a few,

your comment – ‘But i think many among the audience were telugu people – Cos there was a HUGE applause when Kamal casually says something good about telugu folks… :) ‘ – anand, i have seen the movie in Chennai Sathyam cinemas and the entire theater was applauding here as well. Do i assume all Chennaiites have turned into Telugu folks ?’

that was humor, my friend for which people were applauding – and they were doing so for many other scenes. i must say the dialogues we crisp and neat and suited the mood of the movie.

i wonder how you would have reviewed a movie like Jurassic Park II ? you would have said, ” this movie too is full of dinosaurs! ” ???

Stop drawing parallels with KK man. KK had a cop using his brawn and in VV you have a cop using his brain. it needs some maturity to understand a movie that is slightly intellectual in nature. i would rather compare it with movies like ” CBI Diary Kurippu”. it is exactly reflecting the same mood of ‘CBI…’ on a larger canvas.

talking of your comment – ‘ every character has a flashback”. haven’t you see the hitchcock thrillers. it is essential for movies to have flashback man. If you fell short of the adequate length of a review, do not complete the formality by writing irrelevant things to fill space.

i would request you to see the movie with your friend veera once again. Veera will guide you thru the finer aspects of the movie that missed your eye! happy ‘re’viewing of the movie anand !!

I saw the movie yesterday. My only comment is “Hollywood action movie in Tamil”/

After Kamal returned back to Chennai, the killers go on killing innocent people along the way back to Chennai. The only problem I found in the movie was, while seeing a killing spree, the police reaction was not quite appropriate. The normal reaction would be officer-in-charge should be under a great stress and shout at under officers. Kamal, at places, keep himself cool and behave as if nothing has happened. that didn’t sound quite right to me. Its just my opinion.

This movie is def bettr than lot of cop movies i’ve seen before. the only flaw was introducing the killers with their “proclamation of saving humanity”. Gautham should have kept their identity a secret till kamal comes to their room. would have added to the suspense. Anand to tyour comment “Kamal is gifted with super natural powers called “Raghavan’s instinct” and leads the NY Police to find dead bodies of people who were killed in four different places in the USA. Wow!” Kamal used common sense and follow the trail based on similarities to the previous murder scene in India.

I think your review sucks. *edited* This is a very good movie. Gaiutham had to introduce certain scenes to make evryone understand whts going on. this is a movie in which even a simple layman can understand the plot. The same goes for the subtitles. A good movie for you would be a Vijay bullshit!

    @ Andrew, @Felix and @everyone_else_who_liked_the_movie_and_didn’t_like_my_review

I thought the movie could have been better. That’s my opinion. If you think otherwise then let’s agree to disagree, like gentlemen.

It’s just a movie and I don’t want to waste my time on it anymore. I wouldn’t have spent time on reviewing it if it was not a Kamal movie in the first place.

Kindly stop around with comments … And “yes” I would not hesitate to *edit* and *delete* flame comments.

Gautham Menon seems to have a fascination for some character’s name like Maya ( Jo’s name in KK and Jo’s child name In VV), Ilamaran ( cop friend of Suriya in KK and villain in VV)

He has a liking for villians with long hair.. i think so it needs no explanations… what say ?

@Krishna – Spot on machi! Not just the names and the hair style of the villan – but did you notice the dubbed voice for “Elamaran” – it was none other than the ONE and ONLY Jeevan the villan “Pandiya” from Kaaka Kaaka!

I thought it was just me and some among us who have not come out of the Kaaka Kaaka hangover – but Mr. Gautam sir – you should also try and forget about your old films while making new movies

Saw the movie last night in LA. Mostly agreed with the review mostly. Only thing I couldn’t quite understand was the Windows XP comment coz its fairly well known how many BSOD’s Kamal would’ve encountered if he had used a windows xp laptop…Until I read who you worked for. You’re forgiven. You do need you paycheck after all :)

One thing I can’t understand is what is Jo’s legal status in US when her husband has divorsed her! ‘Anga poi velai theda poren’ is ridiculous! Gautham didn’t have to dwelve too-much into the subject. Too much of violence!

    Hi everyone,

The names Aslam from Sri Lanka. My comments in V V….

    Film Direction – Excellent.

Kamal – Brillaint acting. Quite a different role and no kusumbu this time around.

Cast: Was fantastic. The villains in the movies played their role expectionally well. I must predict the Best Villian’ role this year.

Music – Harris Jayaraj. The music is great as always!!! As i type this am listening to Vennilave Velli Nilave. Excellent music. Love at all the songs in the movie, though i do not understand the meaning of the lyrics. However my mother tounge is Tamil and unfornately its the slang tamil version.

Appraently i watched the movie on two occasions. And planning to go for the 3rd time for the night show with me buddies in Colombo this Friday .

    Cheers

I watched this movie. The first half was really good and went fast as well. The second half was like regular masala items.

But the matured acting of kamal realy need to be appreciated.

The movie is good. Should watch it. Much better than other tamil and hindi movies. The above review, by Anand Hariharan is misleading. Anyone who likes Kamal Haasan should watch this movie. It is definitely worth watching. The movie is more like a Hollywood movie. I don’t understand why Anand Hariharan says “after the flashback boom! there’s Jyothika”. Tell you something Anand..only when things like that happen, the story “moves”. Sad that people don’t like this movie..they have bad taste. I’d give it thumbs up. Can be watched more than once.

  46. Uday said,

Agreed that tere r some errors in the movie. But we hav got to accept that this has been the best movie this year till date.

About Kamal and Jo love story, cme on guys, it is so cute. Gautham has only tried to balance between love and gore violence. It is somwat different from other love stories.

    @Anand,
Please dont go deep into any movie.. Just enjoy the movie for entertainment and return.Or else be a director.

Movie is definitely a must watch…..
Please watch it in a theatre..\
    Cheers…

I guess Kamal has passed his peak, like Mani Ratnam and Shankar. Your review brings out the negatives in a funny way, and I don’t agree with your postives. I write about movie too and here’s the review for ‘Vettaiyadu Velaiyadu’: http://screenart.blogspot.com/2006/09/vettaiyadu-velaiyadu-movie-review.html

Your review brings out the negatives in a funny way, and I don’t see anything positive in this movie. Gautam always spoils the second part.He did same mistake what he did his previous movies Minnalae and Kakka Kakka. But when we compare with other recent movies VV is better.Gautam should have done have better with Kamal, because even SarathKumar would have fitted in that role.It was like Kamal has very low profile in the movie. How do you differentiate with Kamal ?.When we expect movie from Team like Kamal,Gautam and Harris, it should have hit the point. But this one didn’t.

    Plus
    1.KAMAL KAMAL KAMAL
2.Cute Chemistry between Kamalinee and Kamal
    3.Harris,Rajeev [CINEMAPHOTOGRAPHY] and Antony [EDITOR],Balaji

    Minus
    1.Climax
    2.Sequences between Kamal and Jo

I totally agree with Siddarth. Its a fantastic movie. I have watched it 4 times here in Malaysia and might be going for a 5th. Its a beautiful movie. And its a REAL MOVIE compared to all the rubbish we see. After SAMY which came out in 2003 these one is the BEST MOVIE with all the right ingredients. Songs, villains, hero, location, storyline.

And i agree with Uday. Dont go too deep into ANY movie. Watch it and enjoy it. If it fulfills your emotions and feelings than its a good movie. By analysing every single detail in any movie we are only going to see the negatives than the positives.

If everything is negative in a movie than what about song sequences. Where does the music come from. Does it happen in real life when we start singing. Do we have music ? Thats why English movies dont have songs because they feel its not logic.

But we are INDIANS and we love MUSIC and SONGS more than anyone. Thats why we hav songs, back up dancers and so on in a movie.

So enjoy VETTAIYADU VELLAYADU as much as you can because in a few years time we wont be watching the LEGEND CALLED KAAMALAHASAN on screen because he is already 55 as of now.

Than all these critics will say how good he was and how rubbish the actors than are.

I agree with your review totally Anand but in all cop movies or detective novels we have seen the investigator will crack it in a very unusual way. The bone collector itself was not very convincing for me. Either Jo’s character or the Flashback could have been cut to make it shorter.

hey anand i think u r crazy…crazy enough to comment on a movie like that, in which Gautam has tried his best to carve the characters….The camera n editin was far better than a hollywood movie, thanks to anthony..kamal(Mr.ragavan) was perfect with a lil belly..i think it was good since he was projected as a middle-aged man..
Thanks to Mr.Gautam for his beautiful screenplay n direction.

    Hi All,

I saw the movie and liked it. Mr. Anand, I did like your comments which tells me that you were really into this movie with attention to details.. being an advent movie watcher (indianism) I do agree with some of the comments and disagree with some…however, there is one con that I have noticed a lot of em have mentioned here —>> Chemistry between Jo and Kamal — my 2 cents on why it appears that way: this is not a love story for these 2 to have chemistry, infact these are 2 characters meeting unexpectedly during stressfull situation in their life. It is an akward situation to start flirting or romancing. I think the director has done a great job in making it stick to reality as with any 2 mature adults thinking about a relationship — no lust or the craz love games.

In the zillion movies released by the india-wood, I feel movies like this are far and apart — so kudos to Kamal & Co.. or Gautham & Co rather.

    cheers

    AGAXX

To me Kuruthi Punal is the best cop movie made in India-wood, so please do not compare with that movie.

  56. Uday said,

U r exactly right AGAXX… Anand, please dont compare with Kurdipunal… It is once in a lifetime movie… Not all movies will be like that… And one more thing Anand, u say that u r Kamal fan.. No Kamal fan wil write such a review degradin his movie. This is a good movie .. Learn to appreciate it…

    hi anand
I agree with your review. yet the film is fantastic compared with the other tamil films. Gautham is done a good job. No words to describe KAMAL. he is simply great.
Gautham should come out of KK hangover. The villans in both the film are ruthless and monotonous. Gautham should avoid dubbing his voice for villans. (he had dubbed for Jeevan in KK and illamaran in VV).
VV faced many problems. Kamal thought of shelving the project. Producer’s sucide attempt, change of producers etc, inspite of all, gautham managed to bring out a good film.

  61. Karthik said,

It is an okay movie even though it resembles Kakka Kakka a lot. The reviewer had only one thing in mind to launch a serious assault on the logic of the movies. I think it had reasonable pace. My only quirk is it is pretty hard not to wake up neighbours with gun shots in an apartment. NY trip should have been avoided. Burying bodies at will in US without getting caught is not believable.

Kamal looks out of shape and looks old. He doesn’t appear to be convincing. With better casting and some modifications in the story the movie could have been even more convincing.

If you guys are used to watching CSI, Forensic files the gore in the movie is nothing. I have seen far worse scenes in CSI. So i don’t think it is that violent

To be honest movies where people slash each other head off in Madurai district is far illogical and downright stupid. We have accepted so many gangster movies, violent movies recently. I don’t think VV is that bad a movie. You can watch once.

  62. Fred Edwin said,

I have to agree with V. Anand here… There is more scope for the movie… Gautam’s first “episode in an officer’s life” had a plot, a very contemporary style editing and it was certainly faced paced. It certainly launched Actor Surya’s stardom to screeching heights.

Nevertheless, on that note, Kamal only tried to fit into the shoes of the original AnbuSelvan IPS. His DCP role was more etched out to look like another Anbuselvan with psychic premonition which happens to be his so called “instinct”…

Kamal has got to learn to play roles that fit his age. In the scene where he meets with Prakashraj and calls him “Sir” only found me squirming in my seat. I were to cast the actors I would’ve turned the roles around between Prakashraj and Kamal. When will we ever see Kamal playing a slightly older character??? or is he endrum 16???

Gautam’s storyline is quiet mpressive but his storytelling techniques are really old school. I am a huge fan of hollywood movies and I am also a media graduate. It all my years of training and observation, I only find that the indian directors have a sense of spoon feeding the indian polulace with unnecessary information. For example: All the flashbacks has to be in the form of visual narrative in most cases. Indian audiences aren’t retarded!!! They are yet to learn from story tellers from the north like Faran Aktar and Karan Johar. To certainly establish the characters and the background we don’t require insane movie time but be clever in building them up within the plot. However, I liked his story telling technique in Kakka Kakka…

Something I miss in this movie is a Villain like the one in Kakka Kakka, he had onscreen hero-villain chemistry with Surya. He was a natural villian. Amudhan was more cut out to be like him. Usual long hair villian but this time they’re doctors. Just out of curiosity… Do Med schools in US validate doctors to have long hair. Certainly not in Asia though, grooming is a must here.

The part of them being homosexuals in denial was a little over-the-top for me. And it was comedy when it was revealed to Amudhan that Ella was his gay lover… I just loved the way he said “SHIIIITTT!!”… it would even make Jim Carrey with his facial nuances look very novice.

Kamal was stiff and saturated with nostalgia. Jothika was Gothica in this role. PrakashRaj was killed too soon in this movie. He on the other hand is a ace actor who is soothing to watch.

I loved the songs and the song sequence. It really had my feet tapping to the groove. Hats off to Harris Jeyaraj for making it as simple as possible, but in the same token I miss AR Rehman’s musical ensemble touch and finesse’.

Gautham is yet to make another big hit like “Kakka Kakka’… fresh yet original. It doesn’t have to be another episode in a police officer’s life though.

You said – he makes the villains escape from NY and hit Mumbai to sing “Neruppe Sikki Mukki Neruppe” with Deepal Shaw dancing in the beaches of Goa.

Are you sure its’s Deepal Shaw ?? Please see the movie again :) It’s Mumaith Khan and her sister dancing to the song in GOA when the villians are shown scooting around GOA….
